What are the advantages of using a Destination Management Company when planning a meeting or event?

Using a DMC allows a planner to "one-stop shop". All of the details are taken care of so the planner can deal with the most important part of the meeting: the meeting itself. The DMC is the local professional with knowledge of what works well (size and quality of location, food and beverage service, transportation services, etc.). In addition, the DMC works closely with local industry vendors on a regular basis and can negotiate the best possible prices which are then passed on to the client.

What is your professional background and experience in the industry?

When Bonnie Boyd started in the industry in 1980, destination management companies were called "ground operators". Her love of history took her to Washington D.C. and France, where she managed overseas projects which included special events, travel arrangements, visa requirements and staffing. She also has experience in assisting corporate entities and clients relocating to the New Orleans area. This provided tremendous help in expanding her knowledge of her native New Orleans in order to sell it as a destination.

Does BBC plan international meetings?

Yes. In fact, BBC has won the Society of Incentive Travel Executives (SITE) Crystal Award for Most Outstanding Regional Motivational Program-Africa (for Ford of South Africa) and Most Outstanding Regional Motivational Program-Canada (for Xerox of Canada). The competition is annual and global. Both award-winning programs involved the use of motivational and teambuilding activities, special events and theme events, bilingual services, and the full range of meeting services. Relevance and creativity in program design and excellence in trip delivery are the criteria and benchmarks of the global competition.

What has been your most memorable BBC experience?

One evening, BBC re-created Storyville, the city's infamous, turn-of-the-century, legalized red-light district for 50 General Motors of Canada employees on an incentive trip. "The participants, all male, were served drinks and hors d'oeuvres," recalls Bonnie, "by pretty young things, who were dressed discreetly, but somewhat provocatively." After a brief period of flirting, the young ladies enticed the participants into 19th-century carriages, then drove with them to the Sporting House, where once was an old brothel behind the original City Hall. There, they were met by a local actress dressed up as a Madam. She invited them in, and they had hors d'oeuvres and listened to some turn-of-the-century jazz. After they had a couple of drinks, they were "raided", and the big cheese was put in handcuffs and taken away in a mini-motorcoach with a police escort. We rode them through the streets with the sirens going, to Arnaud's restaurant where they had dinner in a private room."
